Learn These 5 Chinese Phrases With Viki!

Learning a new language might seem hard at first, but it’s actually pretty easy. Many Viki fans have shared stories about how they’ve learned new languages by watching dramas and movies on Viki. You’d be surprised at how much you can pick up!

Today, we’re featuring the Chinese dialect of Mandarin. See below as we breakdown and translate some Mandarin phrases into English from popular Taiwanese/Chinese dramas found on Viki.

Never Give Up, Dodo

When Dodo (played by newcomer Yin Hang) and Xu Fei (played by Godfrey Gao) decide to get married, Xu Fei’s siblings come to town to help them with their wedding preparations. But the siblings don’t seem to like Dodo very much. When Dodo puts on her fancy wedding dress, Xu Fei’s brother (who is pictured below in another funny scene with Dodo) criticizes the way she looks in it by saying, “What kind of bad figure is this?”

Man Comes to Tang Dynasty
When Zhi Hao wakes up one day and finds himself in completely unfamiliar surroundings (back in time in the Tang Dynasty) and next to a strange woman, he doesn’t know what to make of the situation. But when the woman tells him that she is his wife, he is very confused and utters, “Darn this!”

Fabulous 30

During a girls’ getaway vacation to Macau with her two best friends, Zhi Qin (played by Albee Huang)  spends the night with a complete stranger. When she returns in the morning to her friends, they show their displeasure by saying, “You’re so dead.”

Dragon Gate

When Mo Yu (played by Alice Ke) is captured along with the prime minister’s daughter by the evil Xiang Yu (played by Tammy Chen) and held inside Dragon Gate, she demands to know, “What are you trying to do?”

Suo Meng Lou

When a beautifully dressed dancer from Shanghai arrives in a small town and goes into the Jiang family shop, they assume she is there to look at the beautiful fabrics instead of to shake up the town with her controversial news. When the workers scurry to attend to the dancer’s needs, they yell at a kitchen worker to bring her some tea, and the worker responds, “Sure thing!”

Tell us in the comments what words you’ve learned from watching Taiwanese/Chinese dramas and movies! Also, which language would you like to see featured next?

6 Must-Try Snack Flavors That Are Only Sold in Asia

Recently, Häagen-Dazs announced two new ice cream flavors in Japan: Tomato Cherry and Carrot Orange. While the combination of fruits and vegetables in ice cream might seem strange, this is only one example of delicious twists on classic flavors and food products that can only be found in Asia. You’ve probably even noticed some being enjoyed by your favorite characters in popular dramas!

Would you try vegetable-flavored ice cream?

Check out the unique flavors of these six popular Asian snacks, and let us know if you’ve ever had — or want to try — them.

The yogurt drink has a wonderful tangy taste, and it’s small size makes it easy to bring along anywhere. In “Rooftop Prince,” Lee Gak (played by Park Yoochun) and Bak Ha (played by Han Ji Min) shared a pack while strolling through the park.

Kit Kat

The chocolate-covered wafer is light and crispy with easy-to-snap-off bars. Since 2000, Japan has introduced more than 200 different flavors of these iconic chocolate wafers, including green tea, blueberry cheesecake, purple yam and banana. The flavors are designed to appeal to younger consumers and are often purchased as part of a good-luck gift since the name sounds like the Japanese phrase “Kitto Katsu,” which means “surely win.”

The most popular flavors of this coated biscuit sticks are strawberry and chocolate, which is what Na Jung (played by Go Ah Ra) is eating while watching Chil Bong (played by Yoo Yeon Seok) pitch during their university’s baseball championships in “Reply 1994.” But there are many more flavors of this delicious snack — such as coconut, peanut, tropical and cheesecake — that are hard to find outside of Asia.

Like Kit Kat, Pocky also comes in a variety of sizes and flavors, most of which are only available in Asia

Potato Chips

The crunching sound heard while eating potato chips is instantly recognizable. Popular flavors include original, barbecue, and sour cream and onion. However, traveling abroad opens up a whole new world of flavor options. In China, Lay’s potato chips come in cucumber, blueberry, and hot and sour fish soup! Thailand offers seaweed, salmon, and hot chili pepper. In “Romance Town,” Soon Geum (played by Sung Yu Ri) and Gun Woo (played by Jung Gyu Woon) walk back from the store after purchasing their favorite potato chips to share.

The sandwich cookies consist of cream filling squeezed between two chocolate disks. Since first being introduced in the United States, Oreos have been produced in many varieties in different countries all around the world. Some notable flavors include milky banana (China), dulce de leche (Chile), green tea (Japan), and orange ice cream (Singapore and Malaysia).

Bottled Tea

The bottled tea market has grown rapidly in recent years, with several drink companies expanding their offerings to include different black and green tea options. In Asia, grocery store shelves are packed with teas that range from chrysanthemum and oolong to barley and corn silk. You can even find bottled tea as a staple in meeting rooms, as evidenced by the scenes from “I Need Romance 3” and “Flower Boy Next Door.”

The 3 Hottest Forbidden Love Make-Out Scenes

We all know the difference between right and wrong, don’t we? But sometimes, the salaciousness of forbidden love is just too irresistible. Asian dramas were once the vehicles for chaste, unrequited love stories. But that is definitely not the case with modern dramas, as evidenced by some of our favorite hot make-out scenes between forbidden lovers. Here are three of our favorites!

Lovestore at the Corner

In this new Taiwanese drama, Shu Lei (played by Lee Wei) cheats on his girlfriend with her best friend, Xin Ni (played by Chloe Wang). Their make-out scene in Episode 1 starts off with Xin Ni jumping on Shu Wei, who is riddled with guilt, but then gets steamy as he gives into the moment.

Shu Lei can’t resist the lusty kiss from Xin Ni in Episode 1 of ‘Lovestore at the Corner’

Secret Love Affair

The entire premise of this guilty-pleasure on-air Korean drama is about an illicit love affair between a 40-year-old woman and a young piano protégé who is half her age. Despite falling instantly in love with Hye Won (played by Kim Hee Ae) when he first sees her, Seon Jae (played by Yoo Ah In) finally consummates his love for her in the most touching, restrained love scene at the end of Episode 8 that is all the more steamy for what it doesn’t show.

See the tasteful love scene at the end of Episode 8 below.

When a Man Loves

There is so much sexual chemistry between Jae Hee (played by Yeon Woo Jin) and his boss’ girlfriend, Mi Do (played by Shin Se Kyung), that it’s sizzling. Episode 12 of this Korean drama contains one of the hottest (and dangerously bold, not to mention “what the hell are you doing?”) make-out scenes of all time when Jae Hee finally can’t hold himself back from jumping Mi Do at his boss’ apartment and engaging in the most scintillating make-out scene inside the luxurious closet of Tae Sung (played by Song Seung Heon).
